What is therapy Like?
Therapy will be different for each person because everybody has a different situation and different goals.
Therapy with me is usually a combination of relational and insight-based talk therapy integrated with non-talk approaches that are evidence-based and highly effective in resolving trauma and stuck parts of people's lives.
These approaches are chosen thoughtfully together by taking into account your needs and style.
How often will we meet?
At the beginning of treatment, I typically see people weekly to gain momentum in the therapeutic process and progress toward treatment goals.
Once treatment is progressing, we can continue meeting weekly or switch to every other week.
Many of my clients also choose monthly follow-along sessions to monitor progress once the original treatment goals are complete.
Some folks who complete treatment with me later circle back around to work with me on new goals or to do 'tune-up' sessions on previous goals or issues.
Can I attend sessions on a drop-in, as-needed basis?
My work with clients is intentionally proactive and consistent. The frequency of sessions is thoughtfully paced and agreed upon together to match the levels of progress in treatment.
Sometimes, sessions will occur when you don't think you need them (and then you'll likely discover that there was plenty to cover in the session).
Therapy that occurs on a drop-in, non-consistent basis can often end up feeling more like reactionary crisis management than proactive therapeutic work.
For this reason, this practice is not a good fit for those seeking drop-in or inconsistently attended therapy services.
How long will it take?
The length of time in treatment will vary for each person.
Everyone’s circumstances, history, and treatment goals are unique, and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on multiple factors.
Therapy can be short-term, long-term, or for a specific issue, and every person processes and works at their own pace. Therefore, the length of time that one engages in therapy varies.
We can work together to determine the right timeframe for your goals and needs.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I'm so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success. Some tips that can help you get the most from your sessions include:
- Bringing a journal to your sessions to write down insights, new skills, and between-session home-practice ideas
- Writing down questions and insights in your journal that come up between sessions and bringing them to your next session
- Attending sessions regularly
- Practicing suggested home practices and skills between sessions to see which ones best work for you
Are there any mental health conditions that are not a good fit for working with you in your online practice?
Research shows that individuals who are experiencing certain problems or conditions are most effectively treated in an in-person office setting. Some of these include:
- Those with recent or current thoughts of hurting themselves or others
- Those with active substance use challenges
- Those who are required to undergo therapy or counseling by a court order or any other authority
- Those who are not able to consistently secure a private space and strong internet connection to attend sessions
Feel free to reach out to discuss if you'd be a good fit for this online therapy practice.
